I cant find any threads about pond dyes and the effects it has In your pond. Im thinking i want to try that route instead of expensive chemicals. Im scared of killing my fish with chemicals and i cant afford to pay someone to do it. Im sick of seeing my pond with coontail and american pondweed in it. I put in 12 grass carp in it last year and it came back this year as strong as ever. I know you wont get a bloom if u use dyes but i havent had but one bloom in the pond anyways in the last 5 years and the dang weeds stole that one after about 3 weeks. I have a yellow lab and she swims in the pond more than the fish do and i dont want her to come out blue?

You will still have your same amount of adult coontail and american pondweed, its just they will be living in blue water as opposed to clear water.

But if JHFV applies it early in the year when the macrophytes (weeds) are not developed yet, it will act the same as an algae bloom will it not blocking out sunlight? Or perhaps Coontail and American pond weed are are different?

I've used Aquashade in a few of my ponds and it completely eliminated Chara growth deeper than 2 feet. I'm liking the dye more and more in ponds where my fish are pellet fed and I'm not concerned about the lack of phytoplankton and zooplankton levels. It's a pain in the derriere to get grass carp where I am and expensive.(The transportation cost more then the darn carp as we are not allowed to pick them up in Indiana. When I finally had it set up to get some, the supplier wanted to stock them in the hottest part of the summer. I know better than that!

JHFV,

No worries about dying the dog or anything else in the water once the dye is dispersed. At least that is my experience.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Keep in mind though what N8ly said about not reducing the growth you have now. The key is to apply it early before the macrophytes get a head start.
