anyone ever use this stuff or have problems with it? its cheap and i bought it from meijers (wal-mart). it is supposed to be safe for everything as is all colorants i thought. 2 different times that i know of that i've used this stuff (lightly) i've had fish turn up dead. coincodence? don't know but i'm not using it anymore. just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience. thanks. matt.

MY POND: 50'X100' (1/8 ACRE) dug in 2006. get's deep quick with a trench dug in the middle that reaches 17' deep. i have aeration. i stock bluegill, bass, trout, and perch and couple crappie.

Never heard of any of the dyes killing fish but I stick to the more expensive well known dyes like Aquashade.

Perhaps the time of year you applied it was when you typically lose some fish and it was coincidental?

Wallmart eh? Does it come from China by chance? If so God knows what's in it.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

sadworld, why were you using the dye? If it was for an algae problem, perhaps the algae suddenly dieing off caused an oxygen depletion?.?.

Sadworld,

I know of two situations where pond dyes indirectly killed fish. The dyes themselves did not directly kill the fish. The dyes blocked the sunlight during a decent plankton bloom and caused the plankton to die. This in-turn caused the oxygen squeeze that killed that fish.

It's always best to use dyes early before excessive plant growth begins and then maintain the dye throughout the year. SOme ponds are more forgiving than others. Ultimately, the depth of the pond and the amount of vegetation present will dicatate how early (or late) to use the dyes.

In one of the cases, Aquashade was used and the other was an off-brand. The brand didn't matter as they both did their job and blcoked the sunlight. Unfortunately, they caused a plant crash that whacked their fish.

I'm not saying that your product couldn't have contained something detrimental, but my experience with this type of situation suggests otherwise.

That makes a lot of sense Shawn. We all know what happens under the ice when light gets blocked by sunlight but that time of year the water actually capable of holding MORE oxygen! I can imagine if one blocked out sunlight in warmer water and killed off some weed growth! \:o

BTW I was just kidding about Wallmart.
