Good question. Pointing the circulator down takes rich DO water from the surface and pushes it down to the bottom. Getting oxygen down to the muck will help it through the decaying process. The bottom is traditionally where there is very low DO making the process very slow. The pump is also aggressive enough to effectively circulate water in the entire pond.
