No prob... Mosquitofish are usually able to have several broods of babies before they need to mate again. Even if you don't have a male, your females may already have enough milt in them to produce several broods without mating again. Once they give birth, you'll have plenty of males for subsequent generations. Just a small 10 gallon tank with some cover in it and you'll have plenty of the little buggers in no time!
Males are usually much smaller and don't have that little black spot by the anal fin. Their anal fin is modified into a reproductive organ called a gonopodium... It's long and narrow, when in an aquarium its easy to see. Might help you see if you got a male and female or just two females.

I have some pretty thek cover in a 55 gallon tank. I moved 7 3-8" CNBG and plants from a 150G to make room for the 1500 tilapia I got yesterday. Guess my supplier did well on sorting. He had nine ponds get flooded 2 weeks ago and a tornado hit him last monday. Out of the 1500 T there were the 2 gams and 1 small crayfish.

When I was 14, I collected some melanistic mosquitofish from FL while visiting my aunt. I selectively bred them for several years. I had almost completely black mosquitofish but gave the hobby up. I used to feed the rejects to my redfin pickerel, rock bass and black crappie.

Hey Rainman,
CJBS2003 is right on the money with his ID of your gambusia. If you have a puddle here you will have gambusia in it. They are very prolific reproducers. Dont know about cold tolerance. They must be elusive because they seem to hang around even in a pond full of game fish. Congrats on the tilapia. I wish our fish and game could realize the advantages of this incredible fish.

I guess the gams are around here but I've never seen them listed for sale at any of the local farms-------There were 2 in the batch and they are hiding well in the CNBG/CC tank. at least for the last 12 hours!

Wow thanks for the info CJ, didn't know they gave birth to live offspring! I was pretty amazed by that fact, or is live birth among fishes more common than I thought?

I think I'll ask my T supplier to throw a few in on purpose with next weeks delivery. Maybe they can help cut the cost of FH/Rosey Reds from PetSmart.
