Well I wish I had more pics but I got 'er done today. I estimate I moved about 75 ten to twelve inch perch and 50 bluegills from 8 to 10 1/4 inches. I also moved a few hundred YOY yellow perch from 4 to 8 inches. This group went into the same cage I have fastest growers of last years production pond.


I have a major spring storm coming with heavy wet snow tomorrow (It's raining cats and dogs here right now), and since I worked by myself didn't get a lot of pictures taken. When i move and handle fish I want to move them them to their destination ASAP. I just hope the fish will be O.K. with all the handling.

Thanks for the offer but I don't ever want to do this again! It's hard on me and it's hard on the fish! Walking up and down a ladder 12 feet above the pond bottom with a bucket full of fish and water is hard on the back! It's even worse if I try and walk up the soft clay steep banks! I just took a hot bath and I am beat!

I hope to get the dyke repaired and muck scraped off the bottom and fill 'er back up! The fish in the smaller pond right now will be caught out by hook and line a few at a time when it's time to move them. Much easier than draining a pond! (I have found out from past experience it's pretty easy to remove virtually all the perch and bluegill from a 1/10th acre pond via angling. They are not the brightest fish in the fish world especially the perch.

I always wish I had taken more pictures after a project like this but it seems like such a rush to complete. Lives are on the line. Nice BG and YP and thanks for the pics. I am going to try and hatch some YP out in a tank when I find some eggs have you ever handled and transfered eggs with any luck.

Cecil, wouldn't it be easier on the fish if you removed them with a fish trap in your 1/10 acre pond?

Yes in fact I have a post on here from spring of 2008 where I did just that. I wish I could tell you what the link is but the search on here doesn't work worth a **** for me. And I know I'm not the only one. Mods?

Just curious why do you want to hatch them out in a tank?

Just to try it and then put some in cages on my dock and try pellet training.

I may be wrong but from my experience as a biologist aid the fish traps were really hard on fish. They seemed to beat around in there with the other fish. That I do not want as one of my niche markets wants flawless fish. Even one scale missing or a split in a fin and the price goes down a lot.

And I'm not sure this pond is set up well for a fish trap. It's narrow and very steep sided. 1:1 slope.

I prefer angling as I quickly bring the fish in, put it in a bucket with a .5 % salt solution and walk over to a large cooler that is also q .5 percent slat solution in a trailer that is hooked up to the my groundskeeper's mower (my dad when he is living on my property and not in Florida for the winter LOL). Then when I get several in the cooler I drive the trailer and mower down to the pond and dump 'em in. There's no rush or worry this way.

If you could pump in well water with zooplankton in it that would be optimum. The fry need to feed on zooplankton ASAP after their egg sacks or used up or they die.

I bought a solar fountain to pump lake water into 500gal tank at 80gal an hour this will supply it with fresh water DO2 and Zooplankton(theory). I did find your thread thanks. (Incubating perch eggs now) I looked through your posts 130 pages

That sounds good! Will you be fertilizing the pond to jump start an algae bloom which will feed the zooplankton? I did that in a pond and had really good luck doing so.

Can you tell me more about this solar fountain pump? Sounds intriging.

I think my lake carried a bloom through winter(if its possible). 18" visability and a nice green tint but it smells a bit poor. If I put water in a jar there is stuff swimming around so i think i will be fine.

I haven't got it yet but it is from ebay. 12.5" 8watt solar fountain. I will modify it to shoot into the tank. The pump is rated 6 foot jet at 180gal/hr. $99 before shipping.

Very interesting. I hope to run all my power needs on the premises some day with solar and wind. I think here in this country we are finally going to make a big leap in alternative energy in the next 10 years. For God's sake we've been lagging behind the rest of the world. I don't believe any of the really large capacity wind generators are even made here.

I am delighted to stand corrected Eric. However I do know before 2008 Germany was the top producer of wind power. But perhaps they were build by GE?

I want to get geothermal heating and cooling and wind power. One thing I noticed my furnace doesn't run b/w 10am and 8pm even below freezing outside with my south facing windows. $700 to heat 16x76 new mobile in the worst winter I can remember on propane.

Yeah, like you read directions.

I've noticed the same with my large south facing windows. Sometimes it can actually get quite warm on a sunny day in the winter. However like an idiot I have cathedral ceilings which negates the geothermal heating and cooling a little.

This will be the year to caulk all the logs and reinforce insulation around the windows. And another power washing and staining of the logs which I am not looking forward to.
