When I first got to SD in the late 80s, I heard the same thing. I think the reason was that bluegills typically reproduce at age 1 and the largemouths don't reproduce until age 2. Thus, the bluegills might have gotten out of hand. Let us know your pond size, water transparency, vegetation, etc.
