Normally I'd think 1.5" - 2" BG would be long for this year's YOY, but in a new pond, if the introduced adult BG just had a very small spawn, it's probably possible with all the available appropriately sized food going to a small number of BG fry.

Thanks Bruce for the kind words. I will make and effort to keep good information. I think SMB/YP/BG/RES/FHM/HSB can work in northern Ohio. I intend to find out. The perch are new as of today. I must admit they were beauties - the 2 at 8" plus were looking good enough to eat. Hopefully the ones in the big pond will survive the summer. The water is 82+ now - where will in go in August? No floaters 5 hours after delivery.

Theo - the small BG I mentioned are in the old (small) pond. Is it possible they are last year's YOY? As you can tell I am not very knowledgeable about these BG yet. I have not seen any BG fry in the new pond. I expect with the big pond over 80 F the spawning has happened. Observing the small ones is easier in the older, smaller pond. They hang out near the edge I use for fishing and feeding japanese beetles (which they do eat). No interest in pellets at either location. My theory is too much live food available.

Only 1,000 morts to be a Pondmeister. Heck, I think I qualify for Grand Poobah.

In the older pond, I fully expect they are 2005 YOY. The biggest 2006 BG YOY I have seen this year (yesterday) were about 1".

What's the top end water temp for SMB survival? I'm not trying to scare Scott, trying to recall data for personal contemplation.

30 C or 86 F is max reported by FishBase. They live as far south as N. Miss & Ala. in the Tenn. River system.
