Bowfin

Ah, never heard a bowfin called a dogfish, just always knew them as bowfin... Only ever caught a few, not really common anywhere I have ever fished.

Thanks, Bruce--that information helps. I realize the shad out-compete the lepomids with sheer numbers, but why wouldn't the bass do quite a bit better?

In reference to what ewest said, yes, no LMB can swallow the largest g-shad, but if there are enough mature LMB, can they devour most of the shad before they get that size?

I know I'm oversimplifying things, and I don't have any scientific data. SO FAR, though, our BG, CNBG, and RES are doing a little worse with the presence of g-shad and our LMB are doing a lot better.

We didn't stock the g-shad, but it's working ok right now. Of course, the goal for that pond is not growing trophy-sized lepomids.

The live LMB may for a while but the ability of the LMB to reproduce can be greatly reduced as the GShad wipe out the plankton the yoy LMB need to survive. Also as a pond gets crowded LMB sometimes stop reproduction efforts entirely. So you end up with very large GShad that nothing can eat and reproduction/recruitment of everything else is suppressed. In that case your pond may contain all the fish it can support and 70% may be GShad.

Thanks, Eric. I didn't realize GShad would effect LMB spawning to that degree. That's definitely something we'll need to monitor.

Now that was cool! I only have dreams of talking whales in pools at airports, and algae, hope the gizzards don't invade my brain like they have my lake, which has no inlet from another lake.
