Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Question about bass I caught

Caught this bass today in a smaller pond. I believe this pond to be well over several decades old, but have no idea how old. I found it on some property the company I work for owns. I think the pond is probably between a half an acre and an acre. Just my guess. Seems to be around 6 feet or so maybe at the deepest spot.

Caught this bass on my first cast. The fish fought really hard. I noticed that the fishes eyes seemed to be closer to his mouth than normal. Is it just me or do you guys agree? I released the fish and the 4 other smaller bass I caught. All fought really hard and were healthy. I don't think this pond gets any pressure and is very isolated. Plan to go back in March or April with some live bait and see what the bluegill / crappie population looks like.

I always love finding little hidden treasures like this pond.

I estimated the bass to be about 4 or 5 pounds. Seemed to be pretty healthy.

I have one pond like that, its only about a half acre and even though its never been managed all of the bass I catch in it are really fat and healthy. Most of the bass in it are 14-16" long but every now and then I will catch a 6 or 7 lbs bass in it. I guess some time the situation is just right for the pond to stay fairly balanced own its own.

Notice on the fish I caught today the eyes seem to be further from the gills and closer to the mouth than the fish I caught a few weeks ago in the 2nd picture.

I mean the eyes to mouth distance looks similar.

that first bass is obviously a forward thinker.

People are extremely sharp at recognizing the tiniest difference in spacing of eyes and other facial features. We're so attuned to it that just 1/32" makes a person look somewhat different to us. I guess that talent could be applied to bass if we think of bass as having a "face".

The difference may have a lot to do with the LB's growth rate. I'm sure the body and head grow at slightly different rates.

Sometimes, a pond eventually reaches a natural balance where some fish get nice and big and there's enough to eat for everyone(fish).

so nobody thinks the fish's eyes in question are abnormal.

It's tough to tell from the picture.

Maybe Dudley Landry could comment being that he's from LA and in the field of eyes.

I think he looks normal to me, but I am sure it is hard to tell just from a picture alone...

Problems, problems and more problems! I've been repeatedly telling those girls to use a pupillometer to determine interpupillary distance and to ignore the PD given by the autorefractor. Now they'll want to find significance in the distance from the center of the upper lip to the center of the pupils. I'll need Theo to come up with a name for that measurement so I can tell them to ignore that as well.
The face of that bass really has me concerned so I'll refer to the reconstructive surgeons who would be far better qualified than I to determine if that bass requires their services. Of course, that bass is probably far too young to qualify for Medicare, leaving the fee an out-of-pocket expense, or to be paid by private insurance or Medicaid. If the bass is grossly overweight and/or has a gold tooth it's probably on Medicaid, but that would be better known if the species or sub-species of the bass could be determined.
