From today's Time magazine:
------
"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5-lb. perch in my lake."

GEORGE W. BUSH, answering a German newspaper reporter who asked him to name the best moment of his five years as President
-------

I think catching a 7.5 pound fish of ANY kind out of your lake would be a best moment. No doubt about it. But what kind of "perch" runs that big?

I don't know if this is the case, but I understand the article was translated from German to English. Unless Dubya is one wild fish story teller, I think what may have happened is he was referring to a bass, and since the German word for perch is Barsch, it's a mistranslation? Just a hunch on my part. Hey, maybe that Texan accent also added to throwing off the translator? \:D

Of course I do know folks down south call bluegills -- perch, or sunperch, but obviously that size is way out of line for a bluegill too.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Edit:

Black bass are not native to Europe but members of the perch family are (Zander, Common perch, ruffe, Caspian Pike-Perch, ect)

I don't believe I said they were but they have been naturalized. What relavance is this?

BTW, their "common perch" better known as European Perch is very close to our yellow perch but slightly different and gets larger. (Has been reported up to 10 lbs.) It's Perca fluviatilis vs. our Perca fluvescens.

Moderators, can we get this one archived? Cecil sorta sticking up for G.W.? ;\) I dont think there could have been a misenterpretation, Dubya may be English language challenged, but his German is impecable.

Politicians only tell half lies that they can get people to believe. This was so proposterous I knew he didn't mean perch. I'm actually a reasonable guy. Just because I disagree with someone's polticies doesn't mean I won't give him the benefit of the doubt. \:D

No they didn't. Bush never said "perch." It was simply that the word bass sounded like their word for perch which is Barsch.
