My province is seeing a drastic reduction in the numbers of frogs and toads recently. I also noticed this in my own wetlands and pond. The gov't is currently studying possible causes for reduction in numbers. I am not suggesting that crayfish play a major role in the widespread lower numbers of frogs/toads, but do they have any or minimal negative impact on the eggs, tadpoles or young? Anyone have any first hand knowledge of this?
Thanks.

Crayfish eat eggs like crazy both fish and tadpole so I guess an increase in crayfish could cause a decrease in yoy tadpoles.

There is probably something else causing the wide spread reduction in numbers but I guess an invasive crafish species could be partly to blame.

I have heard it is mostly pollution which frogs have a porous skin and suck up readily as well as ozone depletion is what is causing frogs and toads to decline in numbers...

James, I hear about this in other places so I doubt that crawdads would be the answer.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Generally speaking, there are many diseases and parasites that infest amphibians on a cyclical basis. They tend to kill the animals with little or no defense. The survivors tend to be more resistant, and they bounce back and improve the species until the next cycle. Sometimes a species decline is blamed on a favorite cause, and it may or may not be factual.

I agree with DD1. In my pond, I have lots of crawdads & lots of frogs.

I assumed it was the explosion of Canada Geese causing the reduction in frogs.
