Here is my nephew with 2 of his first fish caught on his Zebco rod n reel I bought for him last summer when he came up for a visit. He caught the bluegill on his first cast.  He went on to catch about 3 or 4 bass later than evening all by himself. He's 6.

This fish jumped at least 3 feet out of the water once he realized he was hooked.  My nephew Colin reeling one in.

That bass jumping is one of the best shots I've seen in some time.
You jumping in, not so much! (Kidding, just kidding!)
Actually, I can't even conceptualize swimming in a pond right now. Woe is the northern pond-man right now.

The fish were caught but the smiles on those kids faces prove who is now hooked!!

Agreed, kids are the best reason to have a wet hole in the ground with fish.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Better than a TV... I spent more hours playing and fishing in the pond in our neighborhood growing up than I ever did in front of the TV. Such fond memories!

my mom dug up one of my daily journals that my teacher made me keep from 1st or 2nd grade. Every entry from the start of school in August untill about the beginning of Nov said "I went fishing in my lake" (I called that pond a lake). Then from about the end of march to the end of school it started again "I went fishing in my lake". The rest of the stuff was usualy about going Ice skating, hiking, or bike riding, but if it was fishing weather I was fishing.
I want my son to have similar experiences. I can't wait to get him started on fishing. Even if he doesn't take to fishing like I did I still want him to live an active outdoor life. I think it's important to get them started playing outside at an early age.

Neat pics, Eric! Taking kids fishing is the biggest blessing in having a pond.
