Max growth rate for trout in optimum temps is an inch and half a month. If your water temps stayed in the 50's for the most part you could get that.


I had rainbows and goldens in my pond last winter from late October through May. I was able to feed through about Thanksgiving, and them again from about Mid-March on. I didn't see any significant growth -- maybe an inch, to an inch-and-a-half at the most.

We love fish, but neither my wife nor I really cared for the trout. They were truly "fishy" tasting. My bluegill, bass, and catfish are always delicious.

But, they sure were fun to feed and watch.

My first winter with trout in my warmwater pond we had a mild El Nino winter. I had mostly brooks, which prefer cooler water than even rainbows of course but they grew 3 to 4 inches from fall to early May. I had some browns that went from fingerlings to 10 inches.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
