Scuds are voracious feeders considering their small size. All kinds of animal and plant matter are consumed. Very rarely do they attack and consume living animals. Those feeding in vegetation browse on the film of microscopic plants, snimals and organic debris covering leaves stems and other substrates (periphyton). They are classed as omnivorous general scavengers or detritus feeders. Gammarus lacustris is common in hard waters. Higher DO is a necessity. I think for the most part they are a cool-water species.
