Jake, some seem to be born hook shy. Actually, I really believe that some fish are genetically disposed to bite or not to bite. Ewest once provided some study info on it.

But, in my one acre (pre drought) water hole, I am down to about 15 six year old fish. I can occasionally catch 1 but it isn't a sure thing. If I try fishing when I feed, they stop feeding. I probably would have caught them out if I tried harder. I try saving them for my Grandkids.

I can't really tell you what size the "average" fish gets hook shy. I ate the ones that didn't.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
