Any other opinions...anybody?George - I drove down to see where Chris's property is located and it can't be much more than a mile from my gate to his so you should be able to kill two birds with a single trip for sure. It is literally a 20 minute drive for me to get to my property from my home in Paris so like you I can go almost anytime. We need to get Chris's schedule to see when a visit would suit him. Hopefully it will be a few days before he's avaiable so I'll have time to write down all the questions I have for both of you.  It's great to have you guys so close and look foward to meeting you. I've met Chris and his Dad at the PB conferences and look forward to the visit, but not this week as winter is returning. "Our" ponds actually belong to my son who lives in the Charleston area - I'm just the "share cropper". I'm sure some of the pros will chime in to answer your stocking questions for a 5-6 acre lake. Frank, I agree about some eatin fish. However, at $10 per pound for the initial stocking, I think it is a fairly expensive way to get some groceries. Anyway, I haven't seen many that were easy to scoop up. Anybody else have a different story?
Regarding channel cats: I wouldn't PERSONALLY have a pond without them. On the other hand, they become top predators after reaching 2 pounds and are pretty hard to eliminate. Bigger ones can get pretty hook shy.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Looks like a nice project. Make sure your construction contractor does as much as possible to make trenches, humps, brush piles, etc, before the lake fills. Take root-balls and locate them on points and transitional areas to attract fish. Lot's of operators like to have a clean bowl-shaped lake bottom when they finish, but the fish disagree. Hope it works out according to plan.
George and Chris are good knowledgeable pondmeisters, so should be productive.

Jake, some seem to be born hook shy. Actually, I really believe that some fish are genetically disposed to bite or not to bite. Ewest once provided some study info on it.
But, in my one acre (pre drought) water hole, I am down to about 15 six year old fish. I can occasionally catch 1 but it isn't a sure thing. If I try fishing when I feed, they stop feeding. I probably would have caught them out if I tried harder. I try saving them for my Grandkids.
I can't really tell you what size the "average" fish gets hook shy. I ate the ones that didn't.
