Can you tell GS from GS? Well, I have trouble doing this also. We need to decide what abreviations we are going to use for Green Sunfish and Golden Shiners to tell them apart.
Any ideas?

I think that Goldens Shiners should be referred to as Golden Shiners, not GS.

Let GS be Green Sunfish.

Norm :

I have started using GSh for golden shiners . Not sure that is best. But what about gizzard shad. So we have 3 species with GS. What is the best way to keep this straight? One point is that we have published material used here that uses GS for green sunfish when talking about sunfish crosses as in GS x BG.

FWIW, I am trying to always use:

GSF for Green Sunfish
GShiner for Shiners

If I ever talked about them I would use GShad for Shad.

{This leaves the problem Eric noted with the GS in "GSxBG". I will worry about it more when someone successfully crosses Shiners and Sunfish. \:D }

We have three "GS" species, so we will have to use at least three letter acronyms for at least two of them. If we borrow from Hanning codes in Communications Theory (Back in Grad School I always knew I'd be using those classes to talk about fish nicknames on the Internet some day!), "GS" should be used for the species which is most often discussed. Eric is a capable, trusted source to tell us which fish that is.

Perhaps it would be a good idea if there was a list of acronyms in the FAQ. Then we'd have a definite reference source to point to. Like it or not, it would be "PB Approved."

Or we could go on being confused - at HAS produced some entertaining mixups. ;\)

Until we can get a conclusion to the GS x 3 question I will try to use GSF , GShiner and GShad. On which fish is discussed most here I don't know. I think that is a close question , kinda like the 3 sets of initials. \:D Theo I want to see the lepomis x GShiner - that would warrant a new Gallus original fish profile with pics. ;\)

Does anyone object to GSF, GShiner and GShad? If not, can we adopt these as the official Pond Boss abreviations?

I vote yes and also I recommend as suggested by Theo a list of acronyms in the new to be created FAQ section.

I third, fourth, or fifth that vote (lost count as to who has agreed). While we are at it we might as well put in a "abbreviation for dummies" section (mainly for me) that includes shortcuts for IMHO, LOL, and the like.

For consistancy, can we use Upper Case only for seperate words & limit it to 4 letters?

GSf = Green Sunfish
GShr = Golden Shiner
GShd = Gizzard Shad
