It's been too cold out to enjoy working on any of my outdoor projects, so I've been making a sign for my small pond. I dug the pond four years ago, and have called it the pond, the front pond and after digging my big pond, this one became the small pond. It's 3/4 of an acre in size and right next to my home.
It is stocked with fathead minnows, copper head bluegill and channel catfish. We all fish it, but my daughter has some special ability to catch bluegill that nobody else does. She'll catch them on liver, shrimp and hotdogs. The same bait and hook size that we're using for catfish.
Alissa Pond is now its official name.
I cut and welded the frame, then stained a piece of James Hardi cement siding to look like wood. (Thanks Victor) I made the cattails from steel rod and pipe. The seaweed and doohicky on the bottom is from
http://www.kingmetals.com as are the letters. The bluegill is a one of a kind, hand carved piece of art that I found on ebay.
I mounted it to my street light, which is 4 inch galvanized Schedule 40 steel pipe. Heavy duty and thick enough to hold allot of threads when I tapped it for 3/8's bolts. I also used loctite on the bolts to make sure they down work loose when the sign moves in the wind. It's very tight and there is very little movement back and forth. There is no movement up and down.
The paint is all Rustolium oil based. I will clear coat it when the weather warms up a bit, but for now, it's all outdoor paint, so I should be fine for a little while. Even the bluegill is rated for outdoor use.
