Does bottom difuser aeration and the constant turning over of water have a negative impact on plankton? I'm building a 1 acre pond and will stock with LM and BG. Judging by other ponds in my area the climate doesn't usually dictate a necessity for aeration, however if the positives outweigh the negatives I'll probably consider it.

Yes aeration can effect plankton densities. It can also improve DO levels , water quality and carrying capacity. What is your pond depth and what are your pond goals ? Do you have a good plankton bloom in the summer ?

Construction will begin soon, so I can't answer the plankton bloom question. The pond will be about 1 acre, with depth of about 20' at the dam, so average depth about 12' I'd guess. Will stock with LM and BG, and will manage for size as opposed to numbers. Will also stock FH minnows. I like the ability to increase the pond's carrying capacity, but I wasn't sure what it dod to the BG foodsource of plankton. I guess managing for trophy fish might also mean I won't need as high a carrying capacity??? I've read so much on aeration I think I'm even more confused now. Thanks for the input.

I am also interested in aearation to slow down the aging of our lakes, but am told that mine (the problem lake with the planktonic alage) gets enough movement from the wind. I am very interested in the new bacteria biormediation that doesn't require areation for it to work, where it is for nutrient enrichned lakes. We are 8 ft. deep (have the gizzard shad problem) too many storm drains and all vegetation killed by a company that bombed us out with copper sulfate. Our goal is to increase clarity and maintain it as a swimming lake, not a green planktonic algae lake.
