My brother just bought a farm that has a pond full of carp. He'd rather have almost anything else....He just called me to say that he has pumped his 180'x180x17' deep pond down to 80'x20'x2', thinking that he could net out the few carp. Now he realizes that he has hundreds of carp of all sizes and would like to kill them all before we get rain and the pond starts to refill. Any suggestions?
Mud bottom, no outflow at this water level except for the pump..

Keep on pumpin' and throw in about 2-4 hundred pounds of HYDRATED lime----NOT Ag lime and be prepared to move some dead fishies. Personally,I'd put in a ton of hydrated lime to make DARN sure they ALL died!

Others will have suggestions as well I'm sure.

It would also be a wonderful time to add structure or do some renovations if needed.(like breaching the dam to install a never used drain pipe) It would also be a great opportunity to start a new pond construction thread with lots and LOTS of pics!

Also, do you know if the carp are common (most likely) or grass (White Amur)? Other ? would be how they got in the pond to begin with....

Tell your Bro, "good luck" for me! Oh, And glad he bought the farm!........err....new place.....

Like Rainman says, hydrated lime is deadly. For that little bit of water, I would start with 300#. The water will immediately clear and you can see any survivors. If you get survivors, add another bag or 2 until they are all deceased. Avoid using too much, because your water could end up with excessively high PH.

Another option is Rotenone, though you need to have a licensed applicator do it. I'm not sure what is more cost effective in your area...

Definitly figure out how they got there in the first place, carp can quickly repopulate if they are just swimming up from an inlet stream. Hopefully you can control the fish that come and go in your pond.

Although Lime and Rotenone will work the true redneck would prefer dynamite.
