What are you guys seeing down there close to the storm?

I pray that all of our Texas and Louisiana friends will be safe tonight and tomorrow.

Good friends of ours have a beautiful home on the water in Galveston. They are, of course, on higher ground. He emailed my dad and I earlier saying that he will be very surprised if the house is still there when he gets back. What's important is that he and his wife are safe.

I heard CNN ask those who are staying in Galveston to write their SS number on their arm with a permanent marker. That's when you know it's bad.

We also heard that bit on the Houston local news about writing your SS on your arms. I am sitting here about 60 Miles north of downtown Houston and we are already having 30 mile per hour winds no rain yet. They are telling us to expect Hurricane winds this far north of the coast. I know the media has a way of putting a lot of hype but I have a dirty feeling this one is going to be bad since I am 100 mile from the coast and already feeling the winds start.

We're getting pounded with heavy rain here in northern Indiana due to a stationary front and remnants of tropical storm Lowell. Soon the remnants of Ike will add to that for a possible total of over 5 inches.

Not trying to diminish Ike at all but that's a lot of rain for us.

Good morning Cecil.Im about 200 miles from the coast,in the Waco area and its starting to get kinda "breezy" around here.No rain yet but we could get 3-6" later today.Internet keeps going down too.

Well we are starting to really feel the wrath of of Ike. We now have sustained wind of 70 miles a hour and gust up about 85 miles an hour with pounding rain. Still have power though witch is a very good thing. This sure makes me feel very bad for our coastal friends.

O K,its gettin kinda "windy" now,but still no rain yet.Maybe Ill be spared,and my pond can finish driing up and blowing away.Im down about 7 1/2 ft and need 2-3 inches outta this dang storm,not just wind damage,dangit.

I can't tell from the news if Galveston or Galveston Island got the high storm surge that was anticipated.

Of course caution is the right thing, but I'm hoping it was media hype.

Has anyone heard any updates about the idiots getting plastered on the gulf shore at the "Poop Deck" bar? If those fools had to be rescued, they should have to foot the bill! I just pray they are all alive to BE billed!

Brettsker, how are you feeling about your spillway?

Not sure I can relate the query to the Ike-athon....?
I'm very pleased with my spillway. Being a midwestern PM, the only storms with categorical enumerations for intensity that affect me are not born in the Gulf. We do expect to see Ike roam on up this way later on Sunday, but I don't foresee any issues, nor maintain any hesitation or fear.

Yeah, I was talking about the path of the storm seeming to come to IL. as well as the rain you've all been getting.

One of the (many) blessings related to the site we selected to build the pond was a perfect location for an emergency spillway. Our principal spillway pipe is 18" and the drainage is only around 60 ac, so that in of itself minimizes extremes. If the water should get 6" above the top of the principal, the ponds spills out 700 feet away from the dam (at the opposite end of the pond) and drains away to a completely different run-off. At this point, we still have another 24" min of dam.

The "eye" of the hurricaine is in Mena, Arkansas right now. Barely 500 miles from where I sit in Eastern Nebraska. How weird is that?

I could drive to the hurricaine in 3 hours.

It is windy and raining here in Russellville,AR but nothing has been bad so far.

Chicago officially recorded the highest amount of rain in one day yesterday. Although we did not have much of any wind woes, there is serious flooding.
Ike's about to tempt that new record today.

My home, about 6 or 7 miles East of Fort Worth. got 7/10" and very little wind. My land 70 miles NNW of me probably got even less. RATS!!!
