Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations small fish kill?

Hi every one: Just wanted to check and see what info I could get out of you on my fish kill. I had 2 crass carp 15 small blue gill, and 1 very latge bass come up dead the other morning. I got up early to fish before I left for the Buckeyes game and I saw a very large crass carp swimming around, like it was sick. I left for the game at 7 am and a friend was coming fishing at 10 am when he arrived there were 20 fish dead. The water had some large streaky red spots and the water color was very dark looking. I have not had any more die today. ANY THOUGHTS? Thanks

Red streaks up on top of the water? There is an old, very small, shallow pond down the road 1/2 mile from me that has had those for the last week or so. I don't know what it is (algae- or other-wise) but I bet Cody would.

Did it look like this ? Where is the pond (state) ? Has it been green during Aug. ?

I am north of Dayton, Ohio. And yes it had some dark green color to it, no FA floating. I considered it murky? I did not date when I added 1 gal of aqua shade, or 1/2 gal cutrine. Some where near end of July 1st of Aug? I usually have too much water flow to use aqua, but in July and Aug it will usually slow down and then no flow out later in Aug.. Thanks for any info My pond is close to an acre and a half. I have drainage tiles,springs, and farm field run off that come in.

That is a red euglena bloom in the pic. It occurs in our pond when we have a heavy bloom of plankton. Can't say what happened to your pond because of all the factors you mentioned plus there are a number of platonic algae that can be red.

If you had a strong plankton bloom and added dye and copper you may have come close to an O2 depletion when you reduced the O2 producing plankton.

Why did you add the dye and CU ?

So what needs to be done? And how do I achieve it?

becuse that is what I do every year???? I usually try to stay on top of the FA, and I thought it was that time again. I hate to rake the FA so I just try to stay ahead of it. One inlet to my pond is really shallow and I generally get way to much FA. Other than that I DO NOT KNOW.

HEY GUYS here is a interesting question. How do you stay ahead (or get rid of) FA without substantial reduction of planktonic algae and thus reduce possible DO problems. ANY ideas ?

it may sound like a broken record, but time controlled bottom diffused aeration has kept my FA negligible while the water still maintains planktonic algae.

i aerate from 11 pm to 8 am nightly for a pond that is now about 2/3 acre due to drought. i have two sets of diffusers, one in a channel up in the shallow end, and one in the deep end. the aeration has also kept what i think is coontail from taking over, and has kept the pondweed confined to a rim around the edges of pond.

Stock Tilapia or for states that do not allow tilapia you should stock the super hybrid condegalluskwestsungeopfertello strain of Green Sunfish that eats FA, maintains the perfect planktonic algae bloom and grows to well over 3 lbs.

Brian is in Ohio. Tilapia are legal here as far as I know, but finding them is difficult compared to down South.

O well I just got a fountain up and I ran it for a little while. It still needs a little work. Should I go ahead and spot treat one side of my pond with cutrine, or some lime(hydrated)?

Well:
The pond seems to be doing ok. I caught about 12 smaller crappie, 1 nice BC, and a small bass Friday before HS football game. The fish were feeding on bugs all over the pond and could have made for some great fly fishing. Hopefully all is well and I can remember this for next year. Thanks
