We have had a heavy overcast for a few days now and it killed my biggest bluecat. It was 19 1/2 pounds. Made me sick. I seined about ten that were eight to twelve pounders and put them in my barn. I guess if they look okay when the clouds are gone I'll put them back in. We finally got rain this morning. It seem to help the other fish, but we are forcasted to have clouds for a week. My other pets in the other pond have electricity so I put in a pump to splash. I think they will be okay.

Jeez, 19.5 pounds, that was one big cat. Sorry to hear about that.

Pardon the stupid question (I'm full of them) but how did the heavy overcast kill your cat?

Brian, what kind of setup do you have in your barn that allows you to keep that size and quantity of big fish alive? Also, why not just put them in the pond that has the electricity?

Just do it...

JHAP,

I think the overcast affects the plankton bloom. When the plankton does not get enough sun light it causes a large plankton die off which increases the demand for oxygen and also decreases the supply of oxygen.

Experts, let me know if I'm wrong.

I have a stainless steel tank that is maybe 400 gallons full that I have about 300 gallons in. I have two submersable pumps going (about 200 gph at 4.5' head). I'm not going to feed them so the water will stay clean. I know I can keep them alive for a while. I just don't know how beat up they will be.
The pond with electicity is the one with feed trained largemouth. They are more precious than my cats so I am keeping the catfish low in that pond.
Plants in the water make oxygen during the day and use a little at night, so even if the plankton doesn't die off, it will lower the oxygen. I'm always surprised when the experts don't mention cloud cover when talking about fish kills. I'm not an expert but I do know that 100% of my fish kills are during cloudy spells. The reason may be because I have too many fish and too many plants and plankton due to cow patties but the catalyst is cloud cover.
