Full disclosure: My company makes FoodSource lures, so obviously I'm not a disinterested observer to this discussion, but I wanted to make a few comments.

Regarding Gulp, it is made from a plastic called polyvinyl alcohol. Following up on Bruce Condello's post, Gulp might not be digestible. A recent study from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries studied the effects of soft plastic fishing lures on trout. Gulp was one of the plastic brands tested. Oh and since you forced me to re-read this thread I just noticed that Bob is dissecting those fish on his kitchen counter - - even though he has a fish cleaning station about 15 feet away. Man would I be in the dog house for pulling a stunt like that. And I don't even have a dog house, so I'd have to buy a dog house and one of those kosey dog beds, just so I could have a comfortable place to sleep after performing an autopsy on a fish on the kitchen counter.

Oh and since this thread is reopened I have a question, has anyone tried the the foodsource baits discussed here? (I'm not talking about the Soylent Baits). Since Theo choose to open the Soylent Baits thread in an area that us unwashed masses can't post in (come see the oppression inherent in the system) I refuse to comment on his post it's my way of sticking to the man. HA, take that Theo!

But seriously has anyone tried the FoodSource baits? I found their presentation at the PB conference interesting.

I've definitely found that you can catch fish on them. The bites weren't as agressive as they are on real nightcrawler, but the fish would bang around on 'em.

I have had similar experiences to Bruce in limited trials. ALL prepared baits that I have ever tried are inferior to actual worms, nightcrawlers, and mealworms (even stinkbaits on catfish - but stinkbaits ARE much more selective than natural baits and hence better at targetting ONLY catfish, IME). The Food Source Lures have worked about the same as various Berkley Gulp/Powerbait for me so far.

Trials by good bass fishermen who really know how to work a rubber worm would be very interesting. I am no good at that.

Dang, I forgot to take the baits with me when I went to the country. However, at 108 degrees, they might have melted. I'll do better next time.

Theo, worm fishin is easy when done with absolutely no talent. Use a spinning rig and no weight on the line. Just flip it out and work it slowly. They will usually pick it up and run with it. Set the hook when the line starts moving.

Hook rigging?

Depends on structure. It theres any way to get hung up, rig it Texas style. If no hangups, just poke a hook through it and let it drift. That's called wacky worm sans the nail.
