We have at least 5 different types in Iowa. Most live within a few feet of the surface but a couple will go quite deep. One (Prairie Craw) lives underground in the ditchs and rarely around any lakes!
Ross the best way to tell the type is to find some crawdad scat and taste it, if it's sweet then its
opps, sorry that's how you tell the difference between a whitetail buck and doe.
