My two water wells were drilled this week. One well will have a windmill that will assist in keeping my new pond full. The second well will have a 3 hp pump which will give me around 60-90 gallons per minute (it will double as a supply for my house).

The windmill well was drilled close to the pond. I am going to have the standpipe on the windmill about 12' above ground. For now, I will just run a pipe to the pond and have it drop onto some rocks at the edge of the pond. It will look something like this:

The reason for this post is to ask questions about how to have the higher flow rate well water enter the pond. The well is about 150 yards from the edge of the pond. I know that the water needs to interface with air because it won't have any oxygen in it coming straight from the well.

My thoughts are to have the discharge pipe from the well at the edge of the pond. Just in from of the discharge pipe, I will install a deflector shield. The water would hit the deflector shield and be thrust into the air. I think this would provide the air/water interface that is needed and if I can fabricate the deflector shield properly, it will have a water fountain effect and will be nice to look at.

Any thoughts???

A second option other than the deflector / fountain look is to position the end of the pipe just under the water surface. I could mount it so that it is angled and facing up towards the surface of the water. This would cause an updwelling of water and would assist in water circulation. I would think this would accomplish the water/air interface because all of the water from the well would end up on the surface of the pond as it was discharged from the end of the pipe (not sure if that makes sense).

What are your goals/dreams (fishing, swimming, algae farming, etc.) for this pond and how big is it?

Bender,
I have recently dug a pond and will fill it exclusively with well water. You mentioned in a thread the use of a venturi that would assist in the issue of well water having no oxygen. When I clicked on the link, it was not valid. Can you please send to me the info that was in the link?

Here is the link to the Venturi pump I am using:
http://www.aquaticeco.com/subcategories/3537/Venturi-Low-Cost/Venturi/0

I am using this fitting to oxygenate my well water because I am adding the well water directly to the bottom of my pond to keep it cool for trout. If you do not have temperature concerns, I would dig a shallow trench from the windmill to the pond and line it with stone then run a line from the well to the windmill and dump it into the same trench. The water crashing into the rocks on the way down to the pond, especially with a 12' drop, will do a better job than the venturi.

I think Bruce Condello was successful in raising DO levels in his pond using well water and sweeper nozzles positioned horizontally to the pond. You might want to search the forum for sweeper nozzles and see what comes up.

I have my 3/4" outflow pipe under a small dock and just shoot it across the water..my pump is 4hp...I hope I'm not screwing up.
