The deer flies just about carried me away last night. They would latch onto me while I was travelling at full speed on my riding mower, and bite right through my T shirt. Today the back of my hand is swollen twice its size due to one of the bites. Search of the net turned up these Deer Fly Patches. Patches Anyone ever try these and do they work? Any other ideas for keeping these nasty boogers off? Deet doesn't seem to faze them.

For buffalo gnats I mix up some vanilla and water in a spray bottle. Mist your hat and clothes. That might work. No, I don't have a specific amount. Something like 1/3 vanilla.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Today the back of my hand is swollen twice its size due to one of the bites. Avoid scratching the bite, scratching will only make the swelling get worse, been there and done that with deer fly bites in the past. Over the counter Benadryl will also help reduce the swelling. I have never used the patch but whenever I start getting pestered by a deer fly I stop what I am doing, and then I kill the dang thing. FYI - deer fly breed in decaying vegetation along the shore line.

I hate those things. They don't give up until they have nailed ya. I loaded myself down today with 100% deet and it did seem to slow them down. Did get bit once though right through the t-shirt.

This is incredible. For the last couple years I have thought of "inventing" a sticky hat cover for catching deerflies only to find I'm way too late. I hope I can find these patches locally. Everyday in the summer a deerfly will sit on the fencepost all day long and wait for me to get home from work. The instant I step out of the car it will slam against my head every three seconds until I kill it and then one of its brothers replaces him. Or at least that's what it seems like. 
Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

Well, I tried them and they work! I pulled weeds in the garden for 1 1/2 hour last night and when I finished, there were 7 deer flies stuck to the back of my hat - and no bites! I called this number (231) 832-2323 and they mail you the patches immediately with an invoice enclosed. Twelve for $12, but higher quantities are cheaper. If the moderators take out the phone number, send me a PM and I will share it with you.

I remember riding my tractor a while back, mowing a field. I had a very sore shoulder, and the deerflies were biting. One would bite my back, I would say "OW!", and swat at it, and say "OW!" again as I aggravated my sore shoulder. Those patches sound like a great solution. Gee, I hope no deerflies were hurt in making that photograph.

FYI giving a testimonial with a phone # is not a problem as long as you are not the seller or its rep. Some people have tried faking the testimonial when they work for the company and have been ask to leave or have been exposed and humiliated.  Schroeder what you did is ok and is encouraged. We all like to hear about good products. You don't work for the seller do you ? Just kidding !!

I don't know if those patches would work around here cause we got way more than 7 deer flies. For about 3 weeks in July we have so many deer fly that once I grabbed the kids butterfly net and swooped it around my head while going for the mail. When I get done I've got a ball of deer flies in the net about the size of a baseball. I smashed them and dumped them in the pond - fish food! My kids invented something better than the patch. We all wear hats during deer fly season because that at least keeps them off your head. When my kids were younger they always wore straw hats. One day I saw my kid walking down the driveway with a young chicken sitting in the hollow spot on top her staw hat and it was eating deer flies as fast as it could scoop them up. She named that chicken flycatcher.
Gotta get back to fishin!

A trick I learned from an old fisherman for deer flies: When one starts bothering you, hold you hand flat (salute style) just over the top of your head. The deer fly will land on it shortly.
Then bring your hand down slowly, and smack it with your other hand. It is very gratifying to watch them fall to the ground.
I usually have a couple choice words for them as they fall.
