Live in SW Ohio, this week am getting the initial stocking of 3-5" BG, HBG, RES, BC and some 4-6" CC. I was supposed to get some HSB and YP but was told that YP dont do well stocking in summer months, and they are now not bringing them, they suggest I buy much bigger (IE. more expensive and to pay for an additional delivery fee) ones in October. so I have a few questions, first, this is the regions most respected supplier, and wondered at what water temp or air temp does this become a problem?? Pond surface was at 68 about 2 days ago with much colder temps down 18" as I found out by swimming earlier this week) Air temps have been in the mid 80's with a night low of about 70 the last few days but this upcomming week will drop down to the 50's.

Long story short, I called another supplier and he had no idea what this first supplier was talking about and is now bringing me some 4-6" YP early next week.
Bottom line, should i be concerned stocking them this late in the Spring? or will they be ok? if so should I temper them at a longer rate?? deeper water??
Any thoughts would be great!

Another question I had was about HSB, apparently there is a nation wide shortage as 1 of the 2 suppliers had a fire?? any truth to this?? I called and 4 different places told me in different stories, that they were out and were all having a hard time getting them. Just curious if others were hearing the same thing??

One can get all kinds of stories and excuses from hatcheries based on credibility, degree of knowledge / experience and overall honesty of workers. The president of the USA does not even tell the truth or all the facts most of the time.

I would not be afraid to stock yellow perch this time of year PROVIDING they are handled properly. Properly is a Big word here and in my opinion is intreprted differently by different hatcheries. As in ALL cases, especially in early summer & summer, water temperatures should be checked of hauling water and receiving water. With temp differences greater than 4-5F then all fish should be tempered in my opinion. Often in warmer weather hauling water is well water and cooler than ambient waters because cooler water will hold more oxygen, fish wil be respiring less and also bacteria development and ammonia levels with be lower in cooler water. Expect fish truck water to have cooler water than your pond and be prepared to temper fish. Often fish haulers are in a hurry to get to the next stop and are hesitant to properly temper fish.
