I would appreciate any ideas on creating a permanent island in an existing 2 acre pond. I am planning it for an area 90 feet from shore and approximately 400 square feet. The water depth at this spot is approximately 40 inches.
Problem: This will have to be manual labor as there is not much of a budget for this project. A friend suggested sandbags as a base topped with top soil. Another suggestion was to use 3 foot logs stood on end and topped the same way.
TIA for any advice.

I believe I would use rocks. But then, I am loaded with rocks. Keeping the dirt in place is going to be a good trick.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Rocks are scarce around here. Keeping the dirt in place is a problem the way I see it too.

I am going to make the assumption that you are going to use a boat to move the sandbags or whatever materials, since you are talking 90" off shore.
So how about, not exactly an island, but a series of plastic barrels filled with the dirt that you were intending to use. Place the barrels as close or far apart as you wish. You could drill holes in them to let them sink or cut out the entire bottom and fill them in place or you could raft them up at shore line and partially fill them, then float them to your spot and fill the remainder of the way, sinking them in place.
And as opposed to top soil, use clay for the planting layer. It holds together better in water and keeps the plants from floating away.
It could be a project that you could add to over the weeks/months/years.
There were suggestions for locating the barrels for free in other posts.
1/4 & 3/4 acre ponds. A thousand miles from no where and there is no place I want to be...

Theres dump trucks that have attatchments that can throw there load 150 feet. Hire one of those guys?

This sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun. Not any experience building an island when the pond is full.
Years ago there was a bunch that used treated timber tied together with cables to hold the dirt in but this was completed without much water.
Please keep us posted and send pictures.
