I guy told me he put in 4x8 sheets of sheetrock in the bottom of his pond to give him some fishing lanes and kill back the weeds. Is this possible?

Sounds like it should work in keeping "rooted" aquatic vegetation in check. It would not work on non-rooted vegetation like coontail and chara.

My best guess is no but I'll let others chime in on that question. Gypsum (crushed and in a different form) is often added to clear water when clay particles are suspended in the water column.

The sheetrock gypsum will not harm the water quality. However, I don't know how long it would take to dissolve and doubt that it would completely dissolve. The main drawback that I can see would be the thick paper on the wallboard, because it would take quite some time to break down. Most likely a year or two.

Water dries, rocks crumble, and trees die. The only thing that is eternal is the reputation we leave behind.

Gypsum can be purchased in the form of sheetrock wall board. Most all home improvement stores have it. Do not use the pink colored type and try to be sure there are no added fibers as binders. It can be broken up and ground to small pieces and put in. The way to find out how much is to take a water sample in a jar --say a quart --measure out small amount of ground up gyp. measure it and add to see when it clears. Then do the calculations to see how much for the vol of the pond. Read these esp. the last one. Good luck.
