I think, finaly I will be going to get my LMB for my pond. I'm going to get 50, but my ? is do I get 3-4", 4-6" or 6-8". The reason I'm asking is becuase last week I put 2 10-12" in that my neighbor gave me. I don't want them to eat the others I put in.

What is the rule of thumb on how big of a fish a LMB can eat at any give size?

Typically they can eat fish 1/2 their size. The 2 bigger ones pose a problem for all of the ranges you have listed...but if you have plenty of forage, you shouldn't lose too many.

When I stock LMB, I only put in adults in the 12-17" range, and I'm very selective about only putting in fish that exceed 100% of their RW. I like to think I'm stocking only superior growth genetics.

Good question. I'd actually really like to see this answer as well. If one of you "biologist types" know, then I will archive it. Maybe we could even add in some informtation on crappie mouth size, bluegill mouth size, etc.

I don't have mine handy, but doesn't Lusk's LMB book have a chart that shows the weight of the feeding LMB and the weight of the LMB prey?

I found my book, it has it all...a 12.5" LMB will eat a 5.37" Gizzard shad, a 4.09" BG, and a 6.65" LMB \:\)

I have lots of CNBG yoy and I'm guessing I have RES yoy's as well and FH's too. So, I guess I should go with the 6-8"?

6-8" to much $$$. Have to go with the 4-6"

But after that, he will take a nap before eating again.

Will the LMB go after CNBG, RES yoy's and FH before they go after the smaller LMB?

I'm not sure they specifically swim around looking for a specific type fish, they are opportunistic aggressive feeders that eat the first thing that will fit into their mouth. The do patrol the BG beds and shorelines where easy meals are found, so the know where to find food. The odds are in your favor with a nice forage base that the LMB are eating CNBG. It's rare for me to find a LMB in the stomach contents of one I clean, it's almost always BG & bugs.
