"Slick Jim" was the local name for some type of sunfish local to East Texas and highly sought by trotline fishermen.

I do not have a clue as to what variety of sunfish it might be. All I remember (and it's been a while) that in my teen years, several local fishermen raised them in their farm ponds and used them exclusively for throw lines on the Red River below Sheveport,LA.

They claimed that the blues and Ops loved them, but more important.. they were extremely hearty and stayed alive longer than other baitfish.

Anyone ever heard this nickname or have any idea of what sunfish it might be?

I've never heard that name before but my Grandfather was a big time trotline fisherman on Lake Somerville and he swore by "Creek Perch" which actually was a green sunfish. They specialized in catching Blues and Yellow Cats and they used "Creek Perch" exclusively. They would outlast a Bluegill by a large margin.

I'd be willing to bet your "Slick Jim" is a green sunfish.

Here's a second vote for the GSF or "rice slick" as they're know here. I've used them many times on a trot line. Most, if not consumed, will live through the night.

Slick is right. I had some GSF just arrive in my pond, immaculately. It was stocked w' Coppernose from American Sportfishing in March of 07. I wondered if the could have been confused, but my dad told me "those guys are professionals and it isn't likely" and I agreed.

My son caught something he claimed to be a huge brim on the second time he'd fished there. I went running and was stunned. By the end of the day, the young boy was grumbling another GSF.

For those of you who even remember me posting here, I'm sure you will find this humorous. Heck, I was such a GSF hater, and now have them. A creek is around .5 mile from my pond, so I guess a bird, duck or cormorant brought them in.

That might explain this radio transmission just intercepted on the West Coast: "Climb Mount Shiitake!"

Since this thread is discussing GSF I thought I would offer an update from another thread started late last year. It was a good discussion on GSF and how they can be used and/or eliminated when wanting CNBG/LMB fishery. I have been trapping them in a cylindrical perch trap since Dec 07. I have taken out 170+ GSF most in the 4-5" range, several 6-7" and 2 9". I am currently getting alot of the size of pinky finger, so I assume I had a spawn this year. I throw the little ones back in for bass food, but anything 3" or larger goes to the creek about 2 miles away. I did not think the LMB (8-10") will be ready for the 3+" size, and afraid if I leave them in they may create a later spawn. I get LOTS of 1-3" CNBG in my trap now, whereas early in the year it was all GSF, so I believe my efforts to control GSF and allow the CNBG to get to the feed is working. I also have 10 lbs of Tilapia. Here is the other thread:

If you check what the catfish guys use as bait you will see BG as well as GSF and others. To them all small fish are catfish bait.

Yep. Perch are just perch any way you hook them. I prefer a 5/0 through lateral line.

Re-reading that thread Darryl brought back memories, thanks for posting the link. And stop practicing juggling with our GSF, we find it rather demeaning.
