Here are some pics of the green water I have been wondering about. Do you think this is a plankton bloom? Pond just filled up one week ago and the water just kept getting more and more green as temps warmed.

Here are a couple of pics with a plankton bloom. How far can you see into the water ?

hard to say. I got out yesterday at dusk and didn't get to spend a lot of time. How far should I be able to see?

Thx. Now I get it. How come every time I ask a simple question, the answers come back, and I realize I am going to have to become knowledgeable in another "ology." I JUST WANTED A HOLE IN THE GROUND WITH WATER IN IT TO FISH IN! I have found that most problems relating to ponds can be money and time whipped.

One word of advice I give to new pondmeisters. Don't lie to your wife about the costs. Don't try to convince her that you're blowing all of the $ on another woman and motel costs. Several of us have tried that but to no avail. You're gonna get caught.

Seriously, I have gotten a faster education on more subjects on this site than college. Was I really in college? Or was that a real long and expensive beer tasting?

I am amazed at how many areas of expertise and experience I have drawn on here for my project.

On greendon pond, I think maybe it is algae. Do I understand that the plankton show up next and it starts to turn more of a brownish green color? I also wonder about the pollen, because I see a little film collecting in spots. Does pollen play any part in this circle of life?

I am also thinking about going ahead and getting some FH. Then some GSH later next month. OK to have both types? Plans are to have BG adn RES asap.

Goals ? GHS and FH and BG and RES can work provided you have a predator like LMB.

Yep that is the big-daddy goal. I was thnking maybe the BG and RES real soon and maybe wait til summer before LMB. But I would love the idea of accelerating that plan.

I think it's to early for a plankton bloom that large. Personally I see many limestone quarrys have that heavy green tint to them, so Ii am thinking it is a chemical/nutrient found in the springs that is causing this. Also some streams here in Eastern Ky that are near coal mine activity will also have this green tint. In the other thread when you said your new pond had " green streaking", thats what these stream look like (pluse they have huge limestone boulders the size of cars in the stream. And I am almost 100% sure they have no alge bloom.

DonJovi: I thought similar at the beginning since I have been around same phenomena. Feeder stream comes right out of limestone too. However, I know this sounds wierd, but it seems like you can tell the difference between a green color influenced by inert things like rocks, iron, etc. and something "living" in your water. Hard to explain. But it looks like the nice green color in the beginning gave way to an alien being living in the pond in the form of something dark slimy green.
