GW,I had trouble with syphoning with big pipe and found that I was getting air from the BOTTOM of the pipe going back up!I resolved the problem by angling up at the discharge to pre vent air running back up the pipe.The ball is a good idea,I didnt think of that.Try the pipe angle thing and it will self start when your water level comes up.Hope this helps,
