This relates to my thread on putting in piers on the ice and Dwight has rightly said a permanent pier may not be a good idea in the far north due to the thickness of the ice and subsequent ice damage. However I contend that if a pond is one acre or less there is little danger. Of course I could be wrong but I haven't had a problem with ice up to 18 inches on my .62 acre wind and I can tell you we really get the wind here at times. I have no trees to block the wind. However I don't see ice breaking up or moving on my pond until get melts down to an inch or less. So I just want to see how many of you have ponds 1 acre or less My response is Yes.
