I have 2 1/2 acre tanks. one is 2 years old, the other one year old. both stocked the same...50 channel cats, 2 lbs of fatheads, 100 pearch, and 3 hybred stripped bass. I have preatty well fished out the second tank as is leaking and I need to fix it. First tank will a few BIG cats in it, a bunch of pearch of all sizes and I haven,t seen the strippers in a while.
Question.. how about I go get about a 1/4 million fry of shiners or fat heads to keep the first tank a going? is this overkill? good idea or bad idea?

I suscribe to pond boss

thanks virgil

Feed them pellets (fish food) and add some FH and shiners (but no where near that number). Andedrson sells them by Fed-X. If you call them tell them PB sent you (saw their add on the Forum). You might find them near you so you can pick them up. A few pounds at a time will work.

anderson is the add I saw in the magazine. I was of the oppinion that a box of fry would be too much for my 1/2 acre tank. If I understand EWEST, a box of fry WOULD BE too many for my tank.
thanks for the informatation guys

Virgil,

IMHO, unless you have a WHOLE lot of structure for the FH to hide, I doubt if 1% of the FH will survive to become adults. So 250,000 fry is very much at all, in terms of weight.

I don't know squat about the shiners, but from what I've read about the fatheads it would be nearly impossible to stock too many with predators present.

Isn't a pound of FH fry about 100,000? Someone please refresh my memory

FH are generally sold and stocked as adults or near adults. The have a very short lifespan 2 yrs . They are sold by the pound. See this link.

I think a pound of fatheads that I picked up from Andersons = 1,000. I put 38 pounds in a 3 acre pond with tons of cover and with in a few weeks the 4 inch bass and kingfishers nailed them so bad I could not see any of them, so I stocked that again and now I am looking to go back to Andersons for more a third time,. This has all taken place over 2 1/2 months.

Visited the Anderson Minnow Farm website. No pricing. Anybody have the pricing info for shiners and fatheads?

I think virgil is talking about the Shiner fry that Anderson sells.

http://www.andersonminnows.com/foragefish.htm

250000 for $250.00

Last fall I had Anderson's ship 5 lbs (700 medium) Black FH delivered overnight to GA for $80. The man who I placed the order with called me when he noticed that the order was delivered without a signature to make sure I had received them properly. The fish were in the pond 24 hours after I placed the order. I would definitely order from them again.

buzzbait,
I dumped 2 pounds of fatheads in a pond I have that contained approx 60 trout. It was like a feeding frenzy. I though they were all gone until I drained the pond this past week to do some work on it. There were fatheads hiding under the leaves all over the place. Just because you dont see them doesnt mean they arent there. You would hide to if someone was trying to eat you all the time.
