I longer rod helps, and nice smooth guides help too. Keeping the spinning reel's spool pretty full can also help a little. I notice a slim 6'6" rod with a pretty stiff spine casts light tackle a bit further than a 6' rod. Line matters too, and can get you another foot or 2 fo distance, but I'm sure you're up on that.

Thanks guys, I need 6-7 ft rod capable of handling 1/32 � 1/4 oz stuff, with enough backbone to land a decent size fish with out a �blow-out�.

So far the only rod that meets this criteria is Dave�s recommended 6.6 UL ugly stick.

Another option is an 8 ft. steelhead �jig pole� that should be able to handle a big fish if used for steelhead � a wicked fightin� fish.
Anyone have experience with this type rod?
