I emailed this to several friends/family so thought I would share here as well. Pottsy might post some pics on his site for me, if so I will link so you can see the pics.

Subject: Nephews deer and my story (long sorry)

This past weekend was one to never forget. My 10 year old nephew and I headed to the land in KY. This is the third year I have tried to get him on a deer, so he has paid his due.

In the morning we got setup and we saw something early but never saw it again. It turned out it was a doe and it finally came in closer, Dylan of course saw it first. He got setup but too many hardwoods to get a good shot. The doe turned and headed closer, when she got about 35 yards out I stopped her with a bleat and Dylan fired the shot right behind her shoulder. I got it on film but jumped when he shot; it appeared to me the deer ran off unharmed. We got down, looked where she ran, no blood, no hair, nothing. Dylan was not too upset about the miss luckily. We got back in the stand and 5 mins later a little 6 pointer almost gave Dylan the shot but not meant to be. We hunted/scouted rest of morning. I planned to rid of some clothes and make one last attempt farther down the hill after lunch.

On our way back we cruised down by the creek and I look over and a dead doe is lying in the creek. Dylan said thats my deer and I thought it was too big and told him sorry no way. It did not have a bullet hole, but seemed warm still. When I flipped it over there was the entrance hole, just a little outside the shoulder. He had barely just missed vitals and hit guts. For some reason it did not make an exit hole. We wiped blood on his face and got some pictures before getting her out to the house. He got some experience with gutting and cleaning the deer as well. Nice big fat doe at that, see pic hanging up.

We were late getting to the afternoon hunt, so we did not even bring the blind. We were almost at hunting location when we about got ran over by a nice 8 pointer. I could not stop the deer to get Dylan a shot. A dog had ran it up on us and screwed up that area. We had about 1.5 hours at the most before dark. We decided to setup in an area we had hunted the month before and scraped all the leaves from around the base of the tree to not make any noise later in the hunt. I then took off backpack and hit my bleat call I had found. I barely got it back in the pack when Dylan said there is a big buck. He was about 75 yards away and coming quickly. Dylan was slowly moving the gun up to his shoulder when the buck was getting too close to move. He got to within 20 yards of us. It was intense having a buck that close staring you down. I whispered to Dylan to close his eyes and I did the same b/c every time I blinked he would notice it.

Poor Dylan had to hold the gun still at an awkward angle for what seemed like an eternity. He finally turned to look back and Dylan got the gun almost up but then he busted us. He bolted. I bleated loudly and he stopped about 75 yards out. Dylan could only see his butt and with no chance at the shoulder. The buck then turned and faced us. He said he could see the deers eyes. I said can you see his chest, yes Can you see his rack straight at us, yes. Can you see the white patch on his neck, yes. I told him to aim 2 inches below the white patch. When I said this the gun fired and the buck hit the ground. Man I tell you when this happened I started trembling all over. We hugged and high fived but not for long because Dylan had to go see it. You just never know when it is going to happen. We have spent a lot of time in the woods for the last three years. We saw this one less than a minute after sitting down. I think he might have thought I was a deer making a scrape?

I was 32 before I killed a deer bigger than this. I scored him a 119 gross and 115 net, with 21 inch main beams and 17 inch spread, 5 inch bases, almost 200 lbs and 3.5 years old. It is an outstanding deer for a 10 year old unless you grow up in Iowa. What a great shot the bullet had entered right through the neck where it was supposed to. As you can tell Im proud of him. He has enjoyed the time we have spent out trying to get one but actually getting these deer has put the icing on the cake. Thanks for letting me brag.
