A syphon should be less prone to leaking as it does not run through the bottom of the dam.
The past few years I have observed several ponds built in our area, and none have "through the dam piping".
Most have siphon systems and/or emergency spillways, including ours.
Our siphon systems have handled spring flood conditions without reaching emergency spillway conditions.
