Sorry to veer this slightly off course. But Cecil's post brings back the memory of two rather inebriated fishermen I ran across on the Shenandoah River several years ago.

It was a nice summer evening, and I was just getting in my kayak to start fishing. These two fools were just exiting the river with their canoe. I asked about their fishing success. They both pulled up stringers jammed with dead and dying 6- to 10-inch smallmouth bass -- probably at least 25 on each stringer.

I don't know if they were northerners or southerners, but they proudly told me that "the perch were really biting." Since they were far less than sober, I didn't want a confrontation. I remember mumbling under my breath "they sure don't look like any perch I've ever seen before."
