3 pictures of the same fish. I have been moving small BG out of this little pond into my main fishing pond, but suddenly last weekend a bunch of these guys started biting. I had some with a Redear, but after looking at pics tonight I am not sure they were redear. I have no pics of them though. Can I get a positive ID on this guy? If he is a hybrid, is it a horrible thing that I put him and some of his friends in my main pond?

Big mouth for a BG.

A healthy population of BG will usually bury hybrids with shear numbers of offspring.

It does have a large mouth. It is not a standard HBG IMO as it does not have the other traits of one. It could easily be a hybrid lepomis cross other than a HBG. Here is a thread on HBG and other crosses with loads of pics and info.

A few of them should not cause a problem assuming you don't mind a few of their genes mixed in with your BG. What part of the country is the pond in ?

Not many GSF traits other than the large mouth. It bears a little resemblance to some RES/BG hybrids we have seen photos of here. But not a fish that's going to half it's pedigree settled easily by photo analysis.

Oh wait you southern guys call bluegill perch. Man ya gotta stop doin' that!

Sorry to veer this slightly off course. But Cecil's post brings back the memory of two rather inebriated fishermen I ran across on the Shenandoah River several years ago.

It was a nice summer evening, and I was just getting in my kayak to start fishing. These two fools were just exiting the river with their canoe. I asked about their fishing success. They both pulled up stringers jammed with dead and dying 6- to 10-inch smallmouth bass -- probably at least 25 on each stringer.

I don't know if they were northerners or southerners, but they proudly told me that "the perch were really biting." Since they were far less than sober, I didn't want a confrontation. I remember mumbling under my breath "they sure don't look like any perch I've ever seen before."

yes the pond is about 50 miles west of Fort Worth. thanks for the links and pics. I will read up more on these hybrids

I am in Pittsburgh tonight...I wonder how many "perch" are out there in those rivers!

Your pics look pretty similar to this picture below, which is said to be a BG x RES.
