Just had my water ph checked by the local U of A co-op extension. The result was 6.4 and I know it needs to be 7.0 - 7.5 for best results. This is a new 3 acre pond with heavy piled timber that was completed last fall.I also know you need to lime about 1 ton per acre every two or three years, My question is if I throw out one ton per acre, do you guys think that will bring it up into that range or does somebody know a formula that will tell how much lime to bring it up .6 ?

thanks

one more thing lol. Would the granule ag lime work as well as the pound ag lime? Granules would throw better.

buzbait don't worry about the pH as it changes hour by hour throughout the day. Alkalinity is the measure to focus on. It needs to be above 20ppm. Did they tell you the alkalinity ?

Water quality in fish ponds is affected

by the interactions of several

chemical components. Carbon

dioxide, pH, alkalinity and hardness

are interrelated and can have

profound effects on pond productivity,

the level of stress and fish

health, oxygen availability and the

toxicity of ammonia as well as that

of certain metals. Most features of

water quality are not constant.

Carbon dioxide and pH concentrations

fluctuate or cycle daily. Alkalinity

and hardness are relatively

stable but can change over time,

usually weeks to months, depending

on the pH or mineral content

of watershed and bottom soils.

In water with moderate to high alkalinity

(good buffering capacity)

and similar hardness levels, pH is

neutral or slightly basic (7.0 to 8.3)

and does not fluctuate widely.

Ag lime and pelletted lime are similar - see below. The Co-Op will sell ag lime and send the spreader truck to back up to the pond and throw it in - call them.
