Bremer Pond has a structure zone called the Corona Reef. Each Spring I place a buoy at the same location in the south western quadrant of the pond. Then during the open water season I fill empty clean bottles with pond water and sink them by the buoy. The location is in 10-12 feet of water.

I have used my underwater camera to check what is happening down there. The bottles don’t down drop straight down though they do stay in the designated area; sort of a bottle field. I have never seen a broken bottle down there. All of the bottles become covered with algae after a being down there a while and are excellent homes and hiding places for small fish, grubs, crustaceans and miscellaneous underwater life.

Since glass is pretty much inert, it seems to me to be a great material for creating a reef-like environment. Has anyone else on the Forum done something like this?

Wouldn’t a bottle reef in lakes and/or reservoirs be a good way to use some of the tons of glass that goes to the landfill? The reefs could be placed in otherwise barren bottomed areas.

Yea, that'd be nice but I'd really like to see video of the parties in which they created the empty bottles.

Nice idea to use what's available and free to benifit the fish and fisherman.

Howerver, at a dime a bottle/can deposit, $2.40 a case, I don't see a bottle reef in my future. We've had that deposit law for 20 some years now & it has helped to keep that stuff out of the landfills & roadsides but unfortunately there were no plastic water bottles when the law was written so they're not covered, yet.

Pic's or a short video would be interesting to see if you can do it.

I like your bottle idea. I think they're unlikely to break, and even more unlikely to foul your fishing line.

I do something similar with 2-3 ft long pieces of black 1" PVC pipe. I jam 1 end into some sticky clay, and pull it out leaving a clay plug for ballast. The the pipes then sink, and stand upright like black bamboo on the bottom. I have about 30 of them in 1 area, and call it "the stickups". I fancy the stickups will harbor bass when they get some size on them. If it works, I will buy a huge roll of PVC pipe and make more stickups.

Dan – At 10 cents per bottle, living 13 miles from a center that would take them and gas at $3.00 per gallon, I still might favor the reef.

Bob – PVC has a lot of uses in a pond. Did you see my underwater video of the star-burst structure? Beautiful, just beautiful!
