Well, I've been agonizing about how to get a fishing pier in before the pond filled up. I expected it to fill over the next year or so. So I built the pier..




Then it started raining the very next day. After nearly 8 inches of rain, it's full.



I try to live right some of the time......



Truth be told, I think the rain caused a breach in a pond upstream from mine, about a half mile away. I guess I caught most of the water and the fish/frogs.. Now if it will stay sealed and hold water..

Now to decide what kind of fish to put in it.

Very nice dock. If a pond upstream did indeed breach, you will likely be figuring out what fish immigrated in to your pond and how you want to manage from the starting point they give you, rather than stocking from scratch.

I am curious about your (and other) underwater bracing. How is your bracing attached, and what methods have others used for this and how did they stand up over time?

Thanks. I was hoping to do some more work on it before the water level came up. I set all of the posts about 30+ inches deep with concrete. Went thru about 18 inches of clay before hitting some small rocks, but the digging went surprisingly easy.

After it was together I had very little forward movement, because of the length I think (about 36 feet). I had some side to side sway but a couple of cross braces stopped that. I was going to add a couple more on the back side of the outer deck, but will have to get my swim trunks on for that. I used deckscrews to hold the braces initially and used galvanized bolts to cinch it all together.

I'm worried that instead of waking up a lunker like Brettski mentioned, I'll wake up and it will drain like a bathtub.

Amazing the water is already beginning clear on the initial fill. My guess is that's because a lot of of the water being from another pond, as you mentioned. I hope that other pond didn't have any undesirable species.

Wishing you good luck the rest of the way, although I don't think you will need it.

Would it be wise to sample the fish now for undesirable species? If it looks bad Pond Bob could kill everything and start from scratch. OTOH I suppose any species living upstream will make it into his pond eventually anyway...

Are the lights on your dock solar, low voltage, or 110V?

Theo: I was a carpenter, then a millwright, then a welder. Welded steel connections often eliminate the need for lateral bracing, fasteners, and with a good coating will outlive us all. Top it off with composite decking: splinter free, non-slip and no worries except what bait to use and where to put your chair.

Thanks. The lights are solar. In the process of getting the lumber, I ran across the lights on sale and decided that it would help my night vision to find the cooler. Don't know how long they will last, but they were cheap. I don't have any power to the area yet, maybe in a year or two.

The 'braces' across the bottom are really just scaffolding supports that didn't get removed in time.

I had read about concerns using treated lumber for this type of usage, and although what I bought was treated, there isn't much if any that I can see. (I haven't bought any treated lumber for a long time) I was hoping to put on a seal coat and will have to make do in the spring..... I plan on putting a small shelter on the beach next spring as well.
