Pond Boss Forums GENERAL QUESTIONS Help Steep Dam / Types of Grass to Plant - PROBLEM

We did fairly well with our pond overall this first year but as i suspected, even though very pretty, my hubby now finds his steep dam a little too steep for his tractor--some sliding (ooopps). He wants to know is there a grass (that doesn't grow tall and doesn't need mowing much or some type of grass cover, not necessarily Ivy types, that would do well in steep areas to avoid having to mow. Any ideas????

We have had the same trouble. We've tried the weed eater but there is just too much of it. This last mowing, we decided to attach a rope to the front end of a push mower. Then my husband walks around the top of the levee 8 or 10 feet ahead of me, and basically just keeps enough pull on the rope so that the mower doesn't drift down the slope and slide into the water. Easiest mowing we done so far. Just need to stay ahead so the discharge doesn't hurt him. And we only do the part that is steep. We are really trying hard to get bermuda on the levee. Maybe there is something that would be better.

You may want to look into Centipede grass.I understand it only grows to a MAX hight of 8".

My experience is limited, but I've had success with Perrienal Rye. It starts fast, grows to some 12" then sorta lays over. Deep rooted Bermuda would be best to get started next summer. Centipede grass probably would be great in AR, but stresses during cold snaps further north. I'm interested in 'Thermal Blue.' Actually, it has more fescue in the blend, than bluegrass. It seems pretty popular in all the Lowe's and Home Depots I've been in. Supposedly, it has an improved Kentucky 31 fescue (which I've used and like), some short fescue, and the thermal blue, heat & drought tolerant bluegrass. Sounds good on paper. The P. rye and fescues tend to tolerate partial shade. Best to 'ya.
