There is a rare but deadly amoeba that has caused the death of 3 boys this summer in FL that lives in warm water lakes. You would never think something like this could exist - it enters the brain through the nasal passage and if not caught right away causes death. I just thought everyone should read up on this and be aware. I would think this could occur in any part of the US where summer temperatures have heated the water and drought conditions have lowered lake levels. http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/09/18/zarrella.killerlakes/index.html

makes me want to go take a dip  scary stuff sue, it even has a scary morbid name....zarrella.... hard to imagine feeling like you have flu one day, and yer dead the next.

Sue, Some kids died here about 10 years ago from the same thing. They were swimming in a slough when we had super low lake levels. I seem to recall that the amoeba is mostly present in stagnant water.
I guess my ponds, at times, could certainly be considered stagnant.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Maybe all the more reason to use diffuser mixing to keep your water column mixed and stagnation down.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
