Bruce and Eric, I had the same results at that time.

I replied to a post from GaryTexas a few moments ago. It seemed to take about a minute to post. However, the stats at the bottom said it took 1.29 seconds. That's not right.

I'm not a techie but can't understand how a database problem could prevent logging on. I know that the old system had to go but I'm wondering if this thing is being given enough space.

It just took me 87 seconds to load the active topics page, and 14 seconds to load this thread.

Is this consistent with the intermittent nature of the problem?

Same here. Last 4 or 5 days has been slow for me. Not before that though. While others were reporting slowness I was not having any problens. Then last week it started getting bad. Active topics page takes a long long time to load. Both at home and work (broadband at both locations).

I never appreciate it when somebody is a "Tuesday Morning Quarterback," to me, but I concur with Dwight. I've been away from large Internet based data bases for a number of years, but it sure looks like either the new software is not properly setup on the server, or the server is having a problem.

I've seen similar problems before, but like Dwight says, "with zero knowledge of . . . ," it is hard to pin point a problem. The way it has acted for the last several days, I think we are probably headed for a crash, as it seems to look harder and harder for data, and places to put data. It seems to be getting consistenly slower, on average. It was faster right after some mods were made early last week. I'm assuming everything got reset and cleaned up at that time. I've seen Java/SQL driven databases do this when caches were not being emptied. But, it could certainly be any of the things Dwight mentioned. A crash might actually be good. Could the site be moved to a different server with the present host?

IMHO Pond Boss surely doesn't seem large enough, at this time, to warrant a dedicated server. I don't believe it is a bandwidth issue either.

But, if a dedicated server is required, I strongly believe that this site would be very good for advertisers. I read Pond Boss Magazine cover-to-cover in a few hours, and then glance at it a few more times until the next issue comes out. I look at the site many times every month. I believe we also have a lot of non-subscribers who would see these ads.

It's a server issue. I'll advise Bob that we need to make the switch to a dedicated this week (if possible).

We're not in any danger of a crash and the data is all intact. I made a copy of all the database tables last week and downloaded to my local machine and will do another before we switch.

It certainly could be. Failing hardware is by nature intermittent. Failed hardware is just plain dead.

If we are headed for a system crash, then I hope the PB site and all data is backed up somewhere other than on another drive on the same server. As Catmandoo observed, a system crash could be a good thing because the problem hardware diagnosis would be a lot easier.

I would rather be fishing than contemplating consistent intermittency!

Hope somebody figures something out...58 secs to load the response page. Don't have enough minutes in the day as it is. Gotta get back to work...no more "checking in" for a few secs.


Four hours later...I get this "Generated in 237.997 seconds in which 236.756 seconds were spent on a total of 42 queries."

I'm outta here. I'll check back in a few weeks...hopefully things will be working better. I'll be traveling and can't imagine how painful this will be from hotel rooms. Think I'll skip that frustration...

There is no failure or problem related to server hardware, nor forum software. Limits (placed by the current host) on our access to the database are creating the problems.

The database tables are backed up both here and at the host, so we won't lose anything.

We aren't about to crash ... due to growth, it's just time to move.

99% of Forum users don’t care whether or not there is or isn’t a failure of hardware, software, crashing, growth, host limitations or whatever.

What they care about is the damn thing isn’t working and it should have been fixed a long time ago.

Bob and I discussed solutions to the problem. The server where PB now resides was doing upgrades to the database last week. We elected to see if the update made a difference. Obviously it didn't.

We are now going to move PB to a dedicated server.

There are 4 partners in Pond Boss and since the publication does not have money to throw around, they were looking for the most cost effective solution.

I have to be given the OK to start the new server process. We're not dealing with a corrupt table or line of code I can fix. As soon as I hear back from Bob, we'll get the server set up and transfer started.

As I said in an earlier post, I strongly believe that the forum would be a great place for advertisers. There are a lot more viewing minutes here than the magazine can ever possibly hope to attract.

Advertising works. I'm an unfortunate example of its effectiveness.

I paraphrased what my Boss said to me many years ago when our corporate network was up and down for a couple days. What he said had merit, in that a user just needs stuff to work. I didn’t take criticism very well back then, so I pulled the whole IT department (4 of us) and started my own company.
