Can someone please explain what "turn over" of the water in your tank means. My nice 4 month old tank that stays full all the time ( especially with all the rain we've had in central Texas this year) has suddenly gone from a nice dark color that I could see objects 1-1 1/2 feet below surface to a khaki - sandy color. Can only see 3-4 inches now. My soil conservation guy said the water may have turned over and to watch it for a couple weeks. To my knowledge I have not seen any dead fish ( only have forage fish at this time ). Any explainations or suggestions. Thanks

Atticus,

Welcome to Pond Boss. There is a lot of discussion in various places here about turnover, but a really good and simple explanation can be found at:

Mine turned from a nice semi-clear to a smelly mucky dark brown a few years ago due to a mid-summer cold snap w/rain. Pond depth has a lot to do with it, (Mine is 20') and I now aerate 24/7 with a Gast science desk pump all summer season to keep from stratifying. The air is pushed through a 1/2" PVC pipe with lots of 1/8" holes drilled in the last 4' of pipe and placed at the deepest point in my pond. Cheap and works great. I have not had one more problem, and over-all, my pond is in better shape than it was before I aerated, as my daughter and friends love to swim in it.

Atticus, get a glass fruit jar full of the water and set it aside. See what the makeup of the stuff is.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
