I have been seeing them hanging close to the top of the water, within 6 inches, not gasping or moving just coming to the top once in awhile, is this a sign there is a problem with O2 or water temp? Or are they just enjoying the sun,hence the name sunfish?

If your sunfish have even 1/2 the mental agility that Sunil's and Shorty's SMB have exhibited, they probably got ahold of this thread .

ok call me dumb but I don't get the connection of sunfish and NASA, and tin foil hats...

new water ways, if the fish are eating then that is a good sign. I see our BG just under the surface all of the time, this is more true of the smallers ones than the big ones. If you do have a DO sag then it is very unlikey your fish would eat pellets.

If you don't get tin foil hats, that is also a good sign.

if nobody else will help ya, i'll stick my neck out, its one thang i'm good at.......i think he was saying that yer sunnies get shallow cause they love to watch the shuttle and the space station zing across the sky.

i always thought they were called sunnies cause they look like little suns....all round and yellow and sparkly.

It can be a sign of stress but I have also seen sunfish do this that are not stressed. My smaller sunfish do it all the time in summer. Some other reasons they do this is, because the water is warmer near the surface, more D.O near the surface or even a more confortable lesser amount due to supersaturation, they are waiting for terrestrials to blow in, or they feel safer near the surface.

Are they healthy otherwise and are they feeding? If so, I wouldn't worry about it. If they are gulping near the surface (called piping in aquaculture circles) that is indicative of an oxygen problem.

There's a dozen guys on this forum that I always look to as well respected, brilliant on aqua-culture and reliable to keep an informative thread on track. Cecil is a leader...then this happens:

What's wrong? You mean the statement they feel safer near the surface? Or am I missing something? With a light underside on a bright day you may find it hard to believe, but fish can sometimes blend into the surface quite well if they stay still. In fact many larger predator fish hang deeper during bright sunny days, which tends to drive the smaller fish near the surface and they feel safer there. Of course as they get larger they may find this is not the case...

I think they were refering to the terrestrials. I'm thinking you mean land invertebrates? Like bugs and such? With all the tin-foil hats on around here, they might've been thinking like planets or something....you don't really want anything that big blowing in. CB1, you're still close to the top of my list. Bruce, on the other hand, I continue to worry about.

Diehard flyfisherman do call them terrestrials vs. the aquatic form.

I had to look up the dictionary meaning of terrestrial. I'm tellin' ya, when I read that line about terrestrials blowin' in, I busted up. I truly thought that I read another CB1 classic "slip one in when they least expect it". I'm sorry, Cecil, if my twisted sense of humor and Paris Hilton IQ misunderstood your delivery. I still think you should work it into the act.

I still think Bruce's sense of humor ranks at or near the top of the list of regular posters here. Combine that with his extensive knowledge of BG and HSB, and it can get down right scary. Either way, it's the folks on the forum that make it the great read that it is. Tons of knowledge; a good bit of humor; and what you've got is a great way to waste time at work.

My sunfish regularly "sun" their backs. I start to worry when they "sun" their bellies!

Maybe my humor is subconcious?

Our conscious minds only use 95% of our brains; maybe Cecil is unknowingly 95% Brettski-compatible.

My bad, unless Cecil has 190% of the normal human brain. That IS a possibility.
