Is there such a thing as to much of an algae bloom? Not that I think I have to much, it just seams to be often. And if so what can you do about it?

Also, does one have to kill algae, and remove pond weeds before you put pond dye in?

I caught a nice 3-4 lb CC and it had more of a muddy flavor then ever before. I was thinking it was because the water level is so low and the algae is blooming alot.

If visibility gets below a foot, you have to worry about a fishkill occurring. So that's "too dense a bloom."

I've had some really good tasting CC and a couple bad tasting CC from the pond, without being able to correlate a reason why. Soaking fillets in water for a day or so before cooking (or freezing) helps let "bad" flavors rinse out, IMO. SInce I started doing this, I haven't eaten a "bad" CC.

Ditto on what Theo says about the algae bloom level. Here's a link about what causes "off flavor" in catfish and what to do about it.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Thanks guys, I haven't had visibility of a foot since the pond was born lol. I have been thinking of trying to clear it up a little and add the pond dye to keep the algae from getting out of control. Do I need to put in an algaecide before I put in the dye? We also have Charra or Widgen Grass spreading all over, we are gonna try to rake some of it out tonight. One of the problems I have this year is low water level, deepest is only 4ft or so. We just havn't had any rain to speak of, enuff to keep the grass growing but thats all. One other question... how do you know how much lime to add to a pond? I know you have to test for PH, and I am sure it is high since we have a very fertile runoff (horse paster).
